LOS PATIOS, Colombia — Arbelys Briceño fixed her eyes on the chicken soup in the plastic container placed in front of her, the first hot meal she had had in days. She started to eat slowly, almost hesitantly, but then picked up the pace – and grabbed another serving when soup kitchen workers offered seconds.

It was her eighth day traveling from her Venezuelan hometown to Peru, a country the 14-year-old couldn’t locate on a map but her older brother had chosen as her destination. Mosquitoes had scarred his legs. The sun had scorched his face.
