Etihad will plant a mangrove tree for every economic space booking

(August 29, 2022, 11:08 +07)
Etihad Airways is committed to adopting a mangrove tree in the name of every passenger who purchases an Economy Space seat.

In February 2022, Etihad launched a biodiversity, wildlife and environmental protection initiative, aiming to plant 182,000 mangrove trees in Abu Dhabi by the first quarter of 2023.

The next phase of the Etihad Mangrove Forest program involves planting new forests in destinations in other countries.

Mangroves remove up to four times more carbon dioxide from the air than other tropical forests, helping to combat the effects of climate change such as coral bleaching and coastal degradation, as well as supporting the biodiversity and wildlife as an important habitat for fish, birds and other wildlife.

Etihad Airways will plant a mangrove tree for each economy class seat

Through this latest initiative, Etihad will plant a mangrove tree in Abu Dhabi for every economy class seat purchased on any Etihad Airways flight. Each mangrove planted alone will absorb up to 250 kg of CO2 over its lifetime, the same amount produced by an eight-hour flight.

Every traveler who books an Economy Space seat will receive confirmation of their gifted mangrove in the Etihad Forest within 10 days of the flight. From the email link, they have the option to follow, virtually visit, view photos and other details of their tree, confirming the carbon offset of their recent trip.

Passengers have the option to save their claimed tree so they can easily review it later. Through the platform’s app, passengers can “chat” with their chatbot-enabled tree, while being able to track each tree with satellite maps and access data, including CO2 consumption metrics which can be tracked.

“In addition to our own sustainability ambitions, we are committed to helping our customers and partners travel more sustainably and empowering them to make conscious choices. With the latest evolution of our development program aiming to plant a mangrove on behalf of every guest who books an Economy Space seat, we are simplifying the process so that everyone can travel sustainably,” said Mariam Al Qubaisi, Head of Sustainability, Etihad Aviation Group. The Etihad Mangrove Forest is a key initiative in our sustainability drive to ensure our responsibility to remove carbon from the atmosphere is progressing. The intention is to create forests on every continent we fly to and to offer our customers an attractive opportunity to participate in the solution.

Travelers in other cabins can also participate in the Etihad Forest initiative using Etihad Guest Miles in the rewards store, while a range of additional options are offered to meet corporate partner requirements and provide bundled compensation options through the Corporate Conscious Choices program.
